Ali Shariati

ALI SHARIATI had a dynamic influence on the young people of Iran with his lectures and writings during the 1960s and 1970s, which contributed much to the 1979 Islamic Revolution of Iran. A sociologist, educated in Mashhad and Paris, he was also a student of history and philosophy. He subjected contemporary society to critical examinations, using the terms, experiences and concepts founded in Islamic philosophy for his analysis.

He was imprisoned by the Shah regime in the 1970s and later he moved to London where, on June 19, 1977, he died under mysterious circumstances that suggest the involvement of the Shah’s secret police. His works are constantly reprinted and eagerly studied throughout the Muslim world. His works among others are On the Sociology of Islam, Marxism and Other Western Fallacies, The History of Religions, Existentialism and Martyrdom.
