Professor
Dr. Syed Riaz Baquar
Professor
Dr. Syed Riaz Baquar has been associated with research and teaching
for the past thirty years and has published over sixty original
scientific research papers in national and international journals.
He
started his career as a Lecturer in Raza Ali College, Karachi
after completing M.Sc. Degree, in 1955, from University of Karachi
and later joined Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial
Research as Research Botanist. He was awarded a scholarship, under
German Academic Exchange Programme (DAAD) in 1961 and completed
his Doctoral Degree form University of Kiel, Germany in 1964.
He was appointed as Senior Research Officer the same year. In
1969, he was again selected for the award of a Postdoctoral Senior
fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to carry out
research at the institute of Genetics, University of Bonn, Germany
(1969-71). He joined back as Senior Research Officer in 1971.
As
a result of his academic and professional attainments he achieved
international recognition. He is a member of many international
scientific and professional associations such as New York Academy
of Sciences, American Association of Agronomy, Crop Science Society
Association of Plant Taxonomy, International Organization of Plant
Biosystematics. He has widely traveled and visited about forty
countries of the world and attended many workshops and conferences.
He
has worked as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Crop
Science, and Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Sokoto,
Nigeria (1982-87). He has guided and examined many postgraduate
thesises and dissertations. His last assignment was as Professor
and Chairman, Department of Botany, Moi University, Eldoret, Kenya.
His
earlier book on “Medicinal and Poisonous Plants of Pakistan” (1989) has
been widely acclaimed and received National Book Award of Pakistan
in 1991.
